Raiola transferred to Buford from Pinnacle High School in Phoenix in large part because he was only going to get to play half the regular season if he stayed in Arizona. That was also because of a transfer. The Arizona Interscholastic Association suspended Raiola for five games because of the organization’s transfer policy after he had transferred from Chandler High School to Pinnacle at the end of last season.
His father Dominic filed for a hardship hearing, but the case would not have been heard until eight days before the start of the Arizona high school regular season and after talking with the Pinnacle coach, the Raiola’s were convinced Dylan would likely not win the appeal.

That’s when the Raiolas started looking for options and since Dylan had committed to the Georgia Bulldogs May 15, moving closer to his soon-to-be college home made sense. Not just for Dylan but also for his younger brother Dayton, who is a 6-3, 205-pound sophomore quarterback and listed No. 2 on the Wolves depth chart behind his 6-4, 220-pound senior brother.
Now their father Dominic is no stranger to the process. He starred for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, was an NFL second-round draft pick and played 14 seasons in the league with the Detroit Lions.
As for Dylan, he originally committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes last December before changing his mind to the Bulldogs. He’s off to a good start with 3-0 and 7A No.1 Buford, completing close to 60-percent of his passes for right-at 155 passing yards-per-game with six touchdowns and no interceptions.
In Buford he joins the state’s team of the 21st Century with 13 of the Wolves 14 state championships and 18 of its 21 state championship game appearances coming in the 22 years since we stepped into the 2000s. That doesn’t figure to change any time soon with a roster that includes three five-star prospects (including Raiola), seven four-stars, nine three-stars and 33 total players with college scholarship offers.
Buford will be a heavy favorite tonight against Atlanta’s Class 3A Carver Panthers. But pound-for-pound this is one of the grittiest, toughest teams in the state, always willing to take on a challenge. Every team that Carver faces in its non-region schedule is in a higher classification except for their next game when the Panthers host Peach County, which has won three state championships in its great history.
Carver coach Darren Myles doesn’t believe in playing easy games. He knows he could probably put together an easier schedule, but he doesn’t feel that would do the Panthers any good when it came time to play in 3A’s toughest league -- Region 5. The last two championships games in the state have been all Region 5-3A matchups with Cedar Grove defeating Carver in 2021 and then Sandy Creek beating Cedar Grove in a controversial finish last year. And once again the Panthers were right again at the end losing to the eventual state champs in the semifinals.
This will be the third time Carver and Buford have played in the last four years. A rivalry born out of necessity and friendship. Because of their success, both the Panthers and Wolves struggle to put together non-region schedules. And the friendship. Coach Myles worked with Buford coach Bryant Appling’s mother at Bethune Elementary and Appling calls Myles a mentor to him since the 10th grade.
So, the game has a bunch of interesting storylines not to mention a load of future college football talent. Here’s a look at the top prospects to watch.

This week's high school football schedule in Georgia is headlined by No. 1 Buford making the 10-mile trip to take on No. 2 Mill Creek (Hoschton) on Friday.
For the second straight season, the top two squads in Georgia are meeting with a 6-0 record. Buford won 39-27 last season but Mill Creek went on to win the Class AAAAAAA state championship.
Mill Creek, ranked No. 25 in the nation, has a rushing attack led by senior Cameron Robinson that averages more than 200 yards per game. The Buford defense has pitched three shutouts this year with five-star prospects K.J. Bolden, Eddrick Houston and Bryce Perry-Wright playing prominent roles.
Buford, ranked No. 5 in the nation, is led at quarterback by senior Georgia commit Dylan Raiola, who has thrown for 1,350 yards this season. An efficient passer, Raiola has a 66 percent completion percentage and 14 touchdowns without an interception.
No. 4 Colquitt County (Norman Park) will take its perfect 6-0 record on the road to face 6-1 Camden County (Kingsland). Ny Carr leads the Packers in receiving yards and the senior just committed to play at Miami next season. Camden County is led by five-star junior tight end Elyiss Williams, a Georgia commit.
No. 23 Lambert (Suwanee) is 6-0 and hosts 5-1 West Forsyth (Cumming) this week. A year ago, Mallard Creek High School went to Georgia to play national power Buford and lost by 49 points.
That Buford team didn’t have QB Dylan Raiola, the No. 1 quarterback and No. 1 overall player in the class of 2024.
So, on paper, Friday’s rematch in Charlotte looked like it might be lopsided again.
Somebody forgot to tell the Mavericks.
Mallard Creek took a one-touchdown halftime lead and battled the powerhouse Georgia team all game, before losing 10-7.
Mavericks head coach Kennedy Tinsley was proud of his team’s effort and resilience in the game. He knows there are areas that need to be improved, but he said it said a lot about his team to play a top-five team in the nation this close.
“This is a bought-in group,” Tinsley said. “They love each other, they are passionate about (playing) the right way and I still don’t know if this group is more talented than the one we had last year. It just shows the love they have for each other.”
Raiola rallied his team with a pretty third-quarter scoring pass to tie the score, and he directed another drive that ended in a game-winning field goal — after Mallard Creek sacked Raiola to force the kick.
But make no mistake, Buford — which plays in a $60 million stadium and has a monster fan following — had to sweat. Mallard Creek’s defense forced three turnovers and had four sacks of Raiola. Buford, No. 4 in America, beat national power St. Francis (MD) in its opener and St. Francis dropped from No. 3 to No. 8 in the national polls.
Mallard Creek came into the game ranked No. 127 in the national poll and No. 3 in The Observer’s Sweet 16. Mallard Creek took a 7-0 lead when Evan Rambert hit Benjamin Black for an 81-yard touchdown.
The Mavericks led at halftime before Raiola hit KJ Burton with a 41-yard score in the third. In the fourth, Mario Ventura made a 41-yard go-ahead field goal.
“We just had to get back to playing Buford football,” Raiola said. “We beat ourselves up all game. We grinded it out and got the win, but we have a long way to go.”
Mallard Creek had a couple of chances to win late. On the first, Rambert was intercepted with 2:26 to play at the Buford 15. The Mavericks’ defense stood up again, and Mallard Creek got the ball at the Buford 42 with 1:44 left, but on the last drive, Rambert was picked off to seal the game.
“We are obviously disappointed we didn’t get over the hump,” Tinsley said. “We had the chances. But just to have the opportunity and be in the position means a lot to me. Hopefully, it means a lot to our school, our community and our families.”
Benjamin Black, Mallard Creek: He got the lone score of the game for the Mavericks scampering away from several Buford defenders on a screen play that he was able to break for an 81-yard touchdown. Once he hit his next gear, he was a blur leaving everyone behind. He got a little extra attention from the Wolves’ defense for the remainder of the game.
Dylan Raiola, Buford: He is the top player in the nation for a reason. Despite only having 51 yards in the first half, he came back out in the second half poised. He was able to grind out drives and make some key passes leading to first downs and tossed a pretty deep ball on the lone Wolves’ touchdown of the game.
Mallard Creek Defense: You can’t really just pick one player from the Mavericks defense. It was 11-hats-to-the-ball mentality all game long, and they really gave Buford’s offense all it could handle. The Mavericks secured a handful of takeaways and sacked Raiola four times, as well.
Mallard Creek will have a bye week before hosting South Carolina power Gaffney on Sep. 8 at 7:30 p.m. Buford will travel to North Cobb out of Kennesaw, Georgia, next week on Sep. 1 also at 7:30 p.m.

HOSCHTON, Ga. — Update: Mill Creek knocked off Buford by a final of 31-24. Buford QB Dylan Raiola drove down the field and got the Wolves into the red zone, but threw an incomplete pass on the final play of the game.
Mill Creek improved to 7-0 and 2-0 in Region 8-7A play, while Buford suffered their first loss of the season where they now stand at 6-1 overall and 3-1 in Region 8-7A.
If you were watching the exciting ending on ESPN2 and were upset when it cut away for some NBA preseason basketball, here is Mill Creek's go-ahead touchdown and the final play of the game by Buford that fell incomplete as the Hawks stormed the field.
Original story: Friday night should be a lot of fun. It's not too often that the two best high school teams in the state square off in a regional tilt, especially one that features two top-20 teams in the nation and a game that's on ESPN2.
A premiere Friday night matchup pits together Buford and Mill Creek in a 7A battle.
Buford has arguably the best player in the entire nation in UGA quarterback commit Dylan Raiola, but Mill Creek's offense has put on an absolute clinic this season by scoring the most points in the region, with 251. It's safe to say Friday night's contest should be a shootout.
Raiola has been fantastic this season. The five-star has thrown for 1,350 yards and has a perfect 14-0 touchdown to interception ratio. He's averaging 225 yards per game through the air and has an exceptional QB rating of 145.7.
Despite having superstar two-way player and Florida State commit KJ Bolden, Raiola has spread the wealth to his receivers. There are five guys with over 100 receiving yards in the season. Bolden has 220 yards and six touchdowns, and three-star junior Jordan Allen -- who has offers from UGA, Clemson and Florida -- leads the team with 18 receptions and 332 yards, according to MaxPreps.
Buford has simply been one of the most dominant teams in GHSA football history, with 13 state championships since 2001. They'll be aiming for another one this year, and that starts with a big region win on Friday night.
On the other side, Mill Creek is coming off of a historic season where they won their first state championship in their young history, a state title game in which they broke the scoring record with 70 points and entered the GHSA record books by scoring the 9th-most points in an entire season, with 712.
After quarterback Hayden Clark graduated in May, Mill Creek has turned to junior Shane Throgmartin who has picked up right where Clark left off (24 TDs, 2 INTs) in 2022. Throgmartin has completed over 76% of his passes (70-92) for 878 yards, 13 touchdowns and two interceptions.
Senior running back Cameron Robinson returns at running back for the Hawks as another explosive weapon after he torched the competition for over 1,800 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground a season ago.
The 5'9", 180-pound back has rushed for 945 yards on 107 carries -- good for nearly nine yards per rush. He'll look to try and top his season-high 229 rushing yards against North Gwinnett in a 49-14 win in Week 1.
But the brightest prospect for the Hawks actually comes on the defensive side of the ball. Defensive end King Joseph Edwards may not only have the best name on the field Friday night, but he may very well be the most talented defensively.
Edwards is a four-star DE with offers from Georgia, Colorado, Alabama, Ole Miss, Florida State, Auburn and 31 other schools. According to 11Alive's insiders at Rivals, the 6-foot-5, 242-pound senior is expected to stay home and choose UGA.
The Wolves of Buford are averaging just over 29 points per game, while the Hawks of Mill Creek are tallying nearly 42 per game. However, Buford did play two nationally-ranked teams from Maryland and North Carolina in their first two games of the season. Against teams from Georgia, they are putting up just over 37 a game.
We'll find out Friday night which team will position themselves in the driver's seat as Mill Creek should be rocking in front of their home crowd. Will Raiola and Buford be able to silence them?

In one of the biggest high school football games in the country this weekend, defending AAAAAAA Georgia state champion No. 25 Mill Creek (Hoschton) showed it is still the team to beat with a 31-24 win over No. 5 Buford on Friday. The game will be remembered not only for the result but also because ESPN2 cut away from the contest for NBA preseason action with 23 seconds remaining and the outcome still in doubt.
Mill Creek scored the game-winner with around a minute left to go in the game as Shane Throgmartin connected with western Kentucky commit Justin Content from 21 yards out. The Hawks extended their win streak to 15 games and avenged their only loss of the 2022 state championship season.
It wouldn't be a shock to see the Hawks and the Wolves meet again for the AAAAAAA state championship.
For now, however, the Hawks bragging rights in one of high school football's power states.
Down 17-10 at half, Mill Creek was forced to punt on its opening possession of the second half but gained new life when the Wolves muffed a punt return at their own 39. The Hawks recovered and tied the game two plays later on a one-yard plunge by Cameron Robinson. Throgmartin connected with Jaiden Patterson for 38 yards on the first play of the drive.
With the nation's No. 1 prospect under center in Dylan Raiola, Buford drove to the Mill Creek one-yard line on its next possession but fumbled the snap on fourth and goal for a turnover on downs.
Mill Creek regained the lead eight plays later when Throgmartin connected with Trajen Greco from 13 yards out with 11:10 remaining in the contest.
A pick-six by Nassir Mccoy helped Buford get back in it and tie the game at 24 before Mill Creek drove for the final score in the final minutes.
Mill Creek then drove for the final score with 70-seconds left.
Mill Creek (7-0) will travel to 1-5 Collins Hill next weekend while Buford (6-1) hits the road to tangle with 1-5 Dacula.
