After a successful launch in Canton last year, chef Todd Hogan has brought his restaurant Community Burger to Milton. Community Burger is in the heart of the Crabapple neighborhood, close to several schools and residential areas.

As someone who calls the area home, Hogan felt it was an obvious choice for his next location.

“With our brand being driven by community and local philanthropy, I felt like it was a home run to go there,” Hogan said in the press release. “We’re excited to build relationships with the neighborhoods and schools that are right at our doorstep.”

The restaurant is a short walk from Crabapple Crossing Elementary, Northwestern Middle and Milton High Schools, which will be among the first partners for the My Community Matters give-back program. With each order, guests receive a wooden nickel that they can drop into a container to designate a donation to their chosen nonprofit or school. After the quarter is over, the donation is divided among the philanthropies based on the votes cast by the guests. Other community partners for the program will include the Milton First Responders Foundation and North Fulton Community Charities.

Like the flagship Canton location, the restaurant will serve a selection of handcrafted burgers, salads and sides complemented by house-made condiments and locally sourced ingredients. Popular menu items include the namesake Community Burger topped with roasted onions, smoked Gouda, horseradish sour cream and a signature sauce; the Texican burger topped with roasted green chilis and onions, jack cheese and arugula; and the Huevos Rancheros burger with chorizo, pepper jack cheese, guacamole, fried egg, arugula and ranchero sauce.

Community Burger will offer a selection of craft cocktails on tap, using fresh ingredients and fruit purées to create batch cocktails like the popular smoked apple whiskey sour. The restaurant also will partner with local breweries like Alpharetta’s Cherry Street Brewing and Canton’s Reformation Brewing by offering a rotating selection of local beers alongside its Community Burger Lite, a custom brew produced by Green Line Brewery in Canton.

Community Burger also has milkshakes in flavors like vanilla chocolate toffee crunch and peaches and cream that can both be made with a boozy twist for adults.

The Crabapple location of Community Burger will be open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for lunch and dinner Sunday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday-Saturday, and will have special hours for Milton High School home football games.

New Jersey’s Playa Bowls is adding four new locations to its profile in Georgia.

Three are in the greater Atlanta area in Milton, Sandy Springs, and Sugar Hill, Georgia. The fourth location will be in the bustling college town of Athens.

The expansion projects will all within the next year, starting as early as August 2023.

Nick Ransom, who began working with the company in New Jersey, owns the new Playa Bowls locations. He has since relocated to Atlanta to focus on expanding the concept in the area alongside two other previously opened locations in Peachtree Corners and Alpharetta, Georgia.

The new locations will continue to offer patrons their favorite superfruit bowls, smoothies, juices & more. Customers at Playa Bowls can pick from a menu of superfruit bowls or custom design their own, choosing from various bases and toppings, including fresh fruit, seeds, nuts, granola, dried berries, and nut butters. Playa Bowls also offers a selection of oatmeal bowls, fresh juices, cold brews, and smoothies. Playa Bowls can be made vegan, gluten-free, and adapted to integrate into Whole 30, keto, and Paleo diets.

Playa Bowls plans to occupy 1818 sq ft of the Beechwood mixed-use development of Athens, GA. It also plans to expand into the Crabapple Market of Milton, GA, Aston City Springs of Sandy Springs, GA, and the Downtown District of Sugar Hill, GA.

A Roswell restaurant is adding coastal flair to its menu with a rebrand.

Coastal Bar, Grill & Chill will open in September at the former Houck’s Grille at 10930 Crabapple Road, Suite B120, in Roswell.

The rebranded restaurant will retain the same personnel as Houck’s Grille.

“Our vision for Coastal is to transport our guests along a captivating expedition capturing the essence of the Gulf Coast’s cuisine, beverages and culture,” Jerome Stuart, the operations director of Coastal said in a press release. “Imagine coastal living interwoven with the warmth of Southern hospitality. It’s a relaxed, inviting neighborhood destination, elevated by the ambiance of a beachside retreat and a menu that transcends expectations.”

The new concept will hold events like Tuesday night trivia and live music performances, according to the press release.

The menu will include the “Ray Bob,” a Southern twist on the timeless Reuben sandwich, as well as Mexican molotes, thin-sliced fried catfish served with gluten-free hush puppies.

“Houck’s has left an indelible legacy of exceptional food, memorable moments and top-notch service,” Stuart said in the press release. “Coastal aims to build upon this legacy by introducing new culinary creations while paying homage to Houck’s classics. From the signature baby back ribs, which will now offer coastal nuances with options like island barbecue sauce and mango-habanero glaze, to the famous handmade fried shrimp that can be transformed into a delectable coconut shrimp rendition, our menu is a tribute to both tradition and innovation.”

“We have a very loyal following, so we wanted to keep a lot of the menu items,” the Roswell restaurant’s founder Carolyn Bradfield told What Now Atlanta.

She said it was time for a brand refresh, after being open since 2015.

“We wanted to take what was traditionally very good about the restaurant and amplify it,” she said. “When you look at rebranding, it comes in three phases. What is your identity? If you’re gonna make a physical change, how does that impact your menu? What kind of experiences are people gonna have when they come to the restaurant?”

Bradfield said future ideas for the new iteration of the restaurant include selling items with coastal flair on their website, like t-shirts, bags or drink holders. They also plan to have buyable art on the walls of the restaurant, she said.

A celebration with the original Houck’s Grille creators Bill and Judy Houck on August 27, 2023, will give guests a chance to preview the new food and beverage offerings. There will also be a silent auction featuring Bill Houck’s sports memorabilia that adorned the restaurant’s walls. The proceeds will benefit local teams including the Roswell Hornets, Blessed Trinity Titans and the Fellowship Christian Paladins.

MILTON, Ga. — With vendor tents on either side, Crabapple Road bustled with people for Milton’s annual arts and antiques festival Oct. 1.

Crabapple Fest has been a part of Milton’s fabric for at least 10 years. In its early days, the festival had few vendors and food tents, children’s activities and antique sellers, said Anita Jupin, Milton Economic Engagement manager. The event has grown and evolved into the large festival and celebration that it is today, she said.

Based on aerial drone footage, an estimated 30,000-35,000 people attended over the course of the 7-hour festival, Jupin said.

Over 100 vendors and close to a dozen non-profit organizations, service providers and food vendors participate in Crabapple Fest each year.

If visitors took a right into the area in front of Milton City Hall, they may have seen a section of vendors, operating independently from Crabapple Fest. These were kid vendors, 46 of them, Renee Dierdorff said.

The young entrepreneurs are part of Kid Biz Expo, an organization that was founded by Dierdorff and Amy Guest last August. Its slogan, “Empowering kids to go beyond the lemonade stand,” came to life at its fifth expo Saturday.

Adeline Aldridge, an exuberant 14-year-old sporting elf ears, participated in the expo with what she calls, “Chaotic Creations.” On the table in front of her were more than a dozen small boxes, painted with different colors. They were monster-like boxes, though, with sculpted eyes bulging from the lids and teeth hanging from their edges, creating a mouth.

The Oct. 1 expo was Aldridge’s second time selling her work. She’s based in Dallas, Georgia. Aldridge said she’s been making stuff for forever. But one day she got bored.

“I was scavenging around, and I found a box, and I said, ‘Hey, you should keep my feathers, and I’m gonna turn you into a monster because I like monsters,” she said. “And I thought, ‘Hey, would other people like this? I mean, I know I like it. There's other people who’s gotta like it. There's no way I'm the only one that likes this type of stuff. Right?’”

Aldridge said she wants to share what she can do with the world.

“Sometimes people can’t find the things that make them happy,” she said. “And I want to be that thing. I want to be the entertainment.”

Music from Atlanta Acoustic Artists resounded from the front porch of Crabapple Family Dentistry, near the intersection. The group played covers, like “Wagon Wheel” from Old Crow Medicine Show, a Grammy-Award-winning folk band.

In the office's front yard, next to several covered picnic tables, children and adults alike attempted to catch the giant bubbles floating from Deborah Mosher’s bubble wand.

Mosher, owner and founder of Bubbles Over Georgia, created a bubble mixture on top of a black tarp. While wearing a sun hat, adorned with an orange boa, and a fall-festive Bubbles Over Georgia T-shirt, Mosher watched the result of her work with a big smile.

Down Crabapple Road, Lisa Simons-Kaminsky was tucked into her tent, which held her mother’s stained-glass work. Gloria Simons, who was absent for the festival, has been making stained glass art for 40 years. This year was their second year participating in Crabapple Fest.

Lisa, who’s based in Alpharetta, began learning the process from her mother about 12 years ago, a process that calls for foiling and soldering. Recently, Lisa has been learning how to do different cuts, requiring different techniques based on whether the glass is curved or straight.

“It's a great outlet,” Lisa said. “It takes a lot of skill, a lot of patience.”

Lisa said her mother picks glass from different places, like antique stores, and designs a piece from whatever she picks, which could be something like a plate or an old perfume bottle.

Lisa said most of her mom's work is customized.

Coal Mountain Panjo, based in Forsyth County, was another vendor on hand. Yes, panjo is a portamento, a combination of pan and banjo.

This year’s Crabapple Fest is Jimmy Loudermilk’s fourth or fifth time serving up visitors with banjos made from repurposed wood and brownie pans, cake pans and other kinds of pans. He’s been playing music for almost 50 years.

The craft dates to the mid-1800s, Loudermilk said, when folks in Appalachia made banjos from cigar boxes. The cigar-box banjo was the first kind of banjo he ever built.

But, people seem to like pans more than cigar boxes, he said.

Both panjos and cigar-box banjos are $40 each, which comes with a songbook of 30 songs, how to play and tune instructions as well as picks. Loudermilk can add pickup to the instrument to make it electric for an additional $10. A copper blues slide is $3.
